This is a beautiful night light. The nightlight consists of a very heavy glass ball that sits atop a little stand where the actual light is. The ball itself is clear glass, but inside of it you can see the solar system, which is etched into the glass itself. The solar system inside is an excellent 3-d model of the solar system, with all the planets surrounding the sun in their orbits. You can see the planets from all the sides of the ball, although you can only read the labels of the planet from the front. Be aware that this is about the size to fit in an adult’s palm, so it’s reasonably small, and wouldn’t be very visible if you were showing it to a classroom full of kids. Saturn is about the size of a pencil eraser, the smaller planets are basically just dots.
This is a more updated version of the solar system, so it doesn’t include Pluto as one of the planets. The light plugs into the wall with a USB end like you would plug into a regular cell phone charger block. The cord is about 3 feet long, so you don’t get too much of a reach on it. There is also a spot to install batteries, if you choose to.
What I don’t like is that the glass ball isn’t attached to the base in any way. It just sits there, freely, with no way to snap or hold it in place. There is a slight depression in the base where the ball sits, but it isn’t very deep. That means the glass ball could easily get knocked off the base. If you slide the base over, the ball could easily roll off of it, especially because it is so smooth. I wouldn’t recommend this for a classroom where kids want to grab onto it- unless you could put it up, out of the kids’ reach. This would be good for an older child or teen- one that knows better than to grab it. It would not be good for smaller children, toddlers, or babies. Also, the glass ball is quite heavy- if it fell on your foot, it could do some real damage. So, again, not for children. This would work best as a gift for a teen or adult, to be put on a secure display shelf. It is not fit for classroom use, other than maybe for décor, as it’s too small for you to show the planets to more than one person at a time.
